Mixed Media

mixed media girl 1.jpg

My first foray into mixed media. This project scared the crap out of me. I am not a confident drawer so it took me quite awhile to get this one completed.  Here are some progress shots……

First, a basic sketch on water colour paper.

I then added some basic colour with my Neocolour II water soluble crayons.

Collage time! I added some scraps of paper which i tore up randomly and adhered with Modge Podge. Then I added a layer of white gesso to the collage area and various highlight areas of the face.3-collage

More Neocolour II crayons over the dried gesso.4-colour-over-collage

I added some shadows using a graphite crayon and some detail to the hair with Inktense and Prisma pencils.

I stencilled on some detail to the clothes area using gesso. 6-gesso

Finally, I stamped on some patterns using Versamark ink, distress ink and embossing powder (which I heat set).

I popped her in a frame to finish her off and Viola!! Done! 🙂

Warm Hands Warm Heart

Here is a fabulous new release called ‘Warm hands warm heart’ by all dressed up. I knew as soon as I saw this one what I was going to create with it. It had to be a rainbow beanie!

I started by colouring the beanie using Prisma Pencils (on watercolour paper).

Here are the colours I used:

Red: raspberry, poppy red, white

Orange: Chestnut, orange, white

Yellow: Mineral orange, spanish orange, deco yellow

Green: Dark green, spring green, white

Blue: Copenhagen blue, true blue, white

Indigo: Violet blue, carribean sea, white

Violet: Violet, lilac, white

Next, I coloured the hair……..

HAIR: White, 90% warm grey, 20% warm grey

I wanted to go for a mixed media type feel for this project so I dipped into by Inktense pencil collection and grabbed a paintbrush to apply the colour to the remaining areas.

Painted with brushed dipped in Inktense Ink black pencil.

I hope you like the end result. It was certainly fun to play with a few different art mediums and bring them all together.

Be sure to check out the All Dressed Up Etsy store as this is just one of the awesome new release stamps for September.

The Cat’s Whiskers

the cats whiskers angle w.jpg

Hello again! Can you believe it is September again! Time for another fab challenge over at All Dressed Up Digital Stamps. This time the theme is pretty pastels. I have chosen this cute image called ‘The Cat’s Whiskers’. Such a sweet stamp that is really versatile.

I decided to get my Inktense pencils out this time. I forgot how fun it was to play with watercolour paper and these amazing pencils. I applied the colours by dipping my paint brush in water, touching it across the tip of the pencil and applying straight to the watercolour paper. Once I finished this, I added some texture with white gesso and a stiff dry brush. The bow was done with a silver Wink Of Stella pen. I finished up by adding a little more depth to the cat with by Prisma pencils. I can never resist the beautiful, vibrant result they offer.

I struggled to find the right background paper for this image so I decided to make by own by scribbling with my Neocolour II crayons and then messing it all up with a watery brush. Gee its fun being messy. The neocolours are super bright so I toned it all down with some more gesso. The end result is a mixed media card. Something very different for me but very fun to do.

Have you every had a play with Inktense or Neocolour crayons? Leave me a comment with the details!!! Would love to see some inspiration!!
